About Us

At Wellstone International High School, international & multilingual learners will achieve academic, personal, & professional success, while becoming advocates for themselves & others. Conveniently co-located with Minneapolis College in downtown Minneapolis, Wellstone International provides English language learning, along with a comprehensive high school curriculum that includes science, math, social studies, & health & physical education.
The school serves students between 17–21 years old. Students come from a broad array of countries & speak a variety of languages, assets they use to critically analyze & respond to local & global issues, while enhancing awareness of self & others. Wellstone ensures students have access to a quality education that prepares them for post-secondary education opportunities, college, career, & full participation in a democratic society.

Wellstone provides an equitable education for English Learners (ELs) by meeting academic & social-emotional needs. WIHS builds on the assets & experiences of ELs’ multilingualism & multiculturalism.
Students are expected to critically analyze & respond to local & global issues, while enhancing awareness of self & others. Academic standards, research-based support systems, & experiential learning come together to produce a rich academic setting. Advanced coursework includes college courses & opportunities for students to prepare for post-secondary options. Wellstone utilizes & promotes collaboration & community engagement through enhanced community partnerships.
Students at Wellstone follow the regular MPS High School Pathways to graduate. Students take a minimum of 21.5 credits as a whole. Students at Wellstone also have the opportunity to enroll to take college courses through Destination:Diploma to Degree, & the Career & Technology Center.

Special education programming

Special education students at Wellstone are served through a team formed by a Special Education Resource Teacher, Social Worker, Psychologist, Therapist, & the Principal. This team will collaborate & meet to complete an Individualized Educational Team & develop a plan of service based on the specific student’s needs & goals. The team will intentionally work with the family & the district to ensure the student receives the best learning experience & that all the students’ rights & responsibilities are met. The special education department is relentlessly focused on students receiving individualized services & equitable instruction in their least restrictive environment. Wellstone is committed to educational evaluations & services that are not predicted by a student’s race.

Curricula

Wellstone follows the district-recommended curricula, along with programming designed & developed by teachers to better serve the needs of English Language Learners, and to align with the Minnesota Department of Education standards.

English language learner programming

English Language (EL) students will receive EL programming based on their EL WIDA level. Students will receive two English Language development classes to support their English language learning, focused in four modalities: Listening, Reading, Writing, & Speaking. Students will also receive embedded EL best practices & strategies in all content area courses, including co-teaching models. Students will be working on preparing for their annual ACCESS assessment through their English classes.

Bullying Prevention Policy

Wellstone follows MPS District Student Rights & Responsibilities, & the Student Handbook. Copies of each can be located on the school website. Wellstone does not tolerate any kind of bullying.
The purpose of this policy is to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for students and staff that is free from bullying or hazing. The District cannot monitor the activities of students at all times and eliminate all incidents of bullying between students or hazing, particularly when students are not under the direct supervision of school personnel. However, to the extent such conduct affects the educational environment of the District’s schools and the rights and welfare of its students and is within the control of the District in its normal operations, it is the District’s intent to prevent bullying and/or hazing. It is also the District’s intent to take action to investigate, respond to, remediate, and impose discipline for those acts of bullying and hazing which have not been successfully prevented.
Bullying or hazing activities of any type are inconsistent with the educational goals of the school district and are prohibited.
