Advanced courses

Higher-level classes like AP, IB, or dual enrollment. Students can earn college credit while still in high school.

Attendance rate

How often students come to school. If 9 out of 10 students come to school each day, the attendance rate is 90%.

Bill of rights

A list that tells parents what they can do to help their child at school. It explains what parents are allowed to ask for.

Cultural competency

When teachers understand different cultures and know how to work well with all kinds of students.

Curriculum

ll the things students learn at school, like math, reading, science, and social studies. Schools can make their own curriculum or choose from a wide range of options.

Demographics

Data about the students at a school, like what races they are, if they are low income, if English is their native language, or if they qualify for special education services.

Discipline data

Data that shows how many students get suspended, expelled, or receive other disciplinary actions.

Family liaison

A person at school whose job is to help families. They answer questions and make sure families feel welcome.

Grade-level materials

Books and lessons that are right for a student’s age. First graders get first grade books, not third grade books.

Grievance procedure

The steps parents follow when they have a problem with the school and want to fix it.

Interpreter

Someone who helps people talk to each other when they speak different languages.

Proficiency

When a student knows what they should know for their grade

Progress

How much a student’s skills improve over time

Restorative practices

A way to handle problems focused on repairing harm rather than giving punishment

Special Education

Extra help that some students get when they have trouble learning or need different kinds of support.

Student-focused instruction

When teachers change how they teach to help each student learn better

Trauma-informed

When schools understand that some bad things might have happened to students and try to help them feel safe and supported.
