Step 1: About My Learner

Think about what you and your child need to succeed in school. Having the answers to these questions will help you understand what you are looking for.

What is most important to you & your student in a school? No school is perfect, and every school offers different things. Think about 2-3 things you care about the most when looking for a school and only look at schools with those things. Check out 9 Elements of a Great School to discover some things to consider.

Answer these questions:

  • What excites my child?
  • What is my child’s favorite part of school?
  • What is the most challenging part of school for my child?
  • How does my child learn?
  • What does my child want to do after high school?
  • What’s the most important thing for you? In a school? To learn?

Step 2: Research Schools

1. Use Minneapolis School Finder to start your search

Go to Go to MinneapolisSchoolFinder.org to use the search and filter functions. Enter your address and desired grade level into the home page, then click search.

Enter your address. This allows results to be sorted by distance from your home.
Choose the grade your learner will be entering next school year.
Click search to see results.

2. Filter your search results using the Transportation filter and the More filter

The transportation filter allows you to view schools that offer transportation or view all schools, regardless of transportation availability.
Filter by other criteria under More, such as languages spoken, academic programs offered, extracurriculars, before and after school care options, uniform requirement and cost of tuition, including a toggle to show only free schools.

3. Learn about a school by clicking on their profile

Find school details, like school hours, address, and contact information at the top.
See about a school’s rating to get an idea of how they are serving students.
See more details in by clicking on About, Academics, Climate, or Equity.
Look for Information icon.and Information icon. icons in each section for detailed information on how scores are calculated.

Step 3: Talk to Schools

Minneapolis School Finder is a starting point with a lot of information, but nothing tells you more about a school than visiting and talking to their staff. Talk to each school you are considering for your child, and visit the schools you are most excited about.

A great place to talk to schools is at the annual Minneapolis School Finder Fair, which happens every January at Minneapolis College.

When deciding on a school, you should feel like you have all the information you need to make the right decision. Ask lots of questions when you talk to schools. Check out the 9 Elements of a Great School, which gives you questions to get you started.

Step 4: Decide on a School, Apply, and Enroll!

Apply to 2-3 schools to ensure your child has a spot in a school you are excited about. Every school’s profile has links to go to each school’s application & enrollment site. After you are accepted to schools, decide which one you want your child to attend and only enroll your student in that one.

Different schools have different steps to enroll. Generally, schools in Minneapolis have enrollment deadlines in February. It is important to apply before these deadlines to make sure your student has the best chance of being accepted. Schools may let you enroll after that, but you may have a lower chance of being accepted if spots fill up.
