Special education programming

Hennepin Schools has a strong Special Education Department with a low student to teacher ratio. Hennepin Schools provides special programming based on students’ Individualized Education Plans. They provide goal based teaching in mathematics, reading, & writing; behavior skills; speech therapy; occupational therapy; developmentally adaptive physical education; & more. The school has a SUN room for students who can benefit from a smaller class size setting & a sensory room. Finally, Hennepin provides Extended School Year (ESY) services to those students who qualify.

English language learner programming

The ESL program at Hennepin Schools offers a combination of individual or small group pull-out & push-in instruction to support English language development. Depending on the student’s grade level & their English language skills, ESL services are provided to meet their specific needs. ESL push-in & pull-out services are a part of the school-wide schedule, implemented to provide extra intervention support in addition to grade-level classroom instructional time. The English language teachers & the classroom teachers work closely together to plan a teaching program that best meets the language & academic needs of each student. Additionally, the ELL teacher works with students in the mainstream classroom to support their learning in a content or mainstream class. Consistent quiz data informs these classroom sessions.
A combination of strategies is used to teach English: relevant texts, phonics, oral language skills, cooperative learning, & integrated reading. Hennepin also focuses on the development of the 4 domains: listening, speaking, reading, & writing that align with WIDA Standards & Can Do descriptors.

School values

Hennepin Schools wish for all Hennepin students to embrace the 3 Cs:
Confident Learner: Students have a strong academic base. They are confident in their current abilities & their future potential.
Caring Community Builder: Students show care in their relationships & care for the community. They work hard to make a positive & lasting impact on their school community, as well as on their city, state, & the world.
Cross Cultural Navigator: Students see cultural diversity as an inherent strength. Through an expansive knowledge of language, culture, & norms across the globe they will be strong cross cultural navigators.

Discipline Policy

Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports
Students who do well or go above & beyond in their behavior or actions will receive reward points, at the discretion of the teacher. Hennepin Schools use a point system to reward student behaviors. Each day, students earn points when they meet learned expectations. Students need to earn points in order to participate in special privileges, such as choice time or Fun Friday. All adults on campus will engage in proactively teaching positive behavior expectations. When a student is struggling to meet expectations, support will be provided.
The main goal of discipline is education.
A discipline referral is used to communicate the details of a specific instance by the staff to the family & the administration. This private data will not be shared with other families. The disciplinary action is determined by the administration, & communicated to families following a completed investigation.

Bullying Prevention Policy

Hennepin Schools strives to provide safe, secure, & respectful learning environments for all students in school buildings, on school grounds, on school buses, & at school-sponsored activities. Bullying is conduct that interferes with a student’s ability to learn & a teacher’s ability to educate. The school’s policy protects students against bullying & retaliation by other students. This policy also protects any student who voluntarily participates in any district function or activity from prohibited conduct, whether the student is enrolled in the district or not. This policy includes the misuse of electronic devices & applications, even off school grounds.
