Academic programming

Cosmos strives to provide authentic Montessori education. The elementary years are seen as one, continuous, developmental “plane,” rather than divided into grades. The curriculum reflects this & is designed as a seamless, five-year program. The integrated Montessori elementary curriculum is grounded in five Great Lessons: The Formation of the Earth, The Timeline of Life, The Special Gifts of Humans, The Story of Language, and The Story of Numbers. These stories help children locate themselves within the whole of the universe & history. Children explore topics & make connections back to the Great Lessons, weaving together curriculum areas. The topics of study can be divided into traditional subject areas: Geography & Social Studies, Physical Science, Life Sciences, Math & Geometry, Language, Art, & Music.

School values

Cosmos Montessori school is a micro-school with an emphasis on developing a strong sense of community and interdependence. They foster independence in their students & staff. They cultivate their capacity to be present, to observe without bias or judgment, to seek the truth, & to act with empathy & love, toward oneself & each other. Cosmos Montessori collaborates with families to offer an authentic, equitable, & accessible Montessori education serving children ages three through 5th grade. They support dual language acquisition & cultural competency development through a holistic approach within a nurturing & multicultural environment. Through such an environment, students learn to become responsible members of a diverse, inclusive, & cooperative community.

Discipline Policy

Discipline in a Montessori environment is not imposed on the child but, rather, is created within the child when there is a balance between freedom & structure. Maintaining this delicate balance is one of the foundations of the Montessori environment. Freedom is not often associated with discipline. Freedom, however, does not mean one can do whatever one wants. Responsibility to oneself & one’s community are essential components of freedom. The school offers freedoms, but within limitations that facilitate the development of responsibility & an internal sense of control.

Bullying Prevention Policy

Cosmos Montessori School strives to provide safe, secure, & respectful learning environments for all students in school buildings, on school grounds, school buses, & at school-sponsored activities. Bullying is conduct that interferes with a student’s ability to learn & a teacher’s ability to educate. Bullying, like other disruptive or violent behavior, is prohibited at Cosmos. They prevent bullying by taking a community building approach so that each child feels seen, valued, & invested in their school community. When harm occurs, they use a restorative justice approach to heal relationships & to help children empathize & understand how their actions impact others.
