In addition to the general academic offerings for elementary schools in Minneapolis Public Schools, Hiawatha offers advanced academic programs in literacy & math for their students.

Hiawatha’s special education department is relentlessly focused on students receiving individualized services & equitable instruction in the least restrictive environment. They are committed to educational evaluations & services that are not predicted by a student’s race. In addition to resources & 504 opportunities, Hiawatha also has a Developmental Cognitive Disability (DCD) classroom at each campus.

Hiawatha strives to create quality learning environments that respect, reflect, & accommodate this diversity. English Language Development programs promote academic achievement of multilingual students who qualify for English Language Development services through research-based instructional strategies, language-rich learning environments, & affirmation of student, family, & community assets.

Located in the Longfellow Neighborhood of South Minneapolis, Hiawatha values the richness that comes from a diversity of ideas, experiences, beliefs, & backgrounds interacting within the community. Involvement & support from families & from the community are critical to achieving the school’s mission & living their values. Hiawatha partners with all stakeholders to support students & build a community of lifelong learners.

Discipline Policy

Hiawatha follows the MPS discipline policy, focusing on a restorative approach that prioritizes equitable outcomes for all students. They have 1 Associate Educator–Behavior Support & a full time social worker at each school site who assist with proactive teaching of conflict resolution along with the SEL curriculum taught by Hiawatha’s classroom teachers.

Bullying Prevention Policy

At Hiawatha, they believe in a proactive approach to preventing bullying. They start each day with a morning meeting, a practice that promotes belonging, inclusion, & community building in each classroom. They use Wayfinder & AmazeWorks curriculum to teach social-emotional skills, including bullying prevention. In collaboration with community partners, Hiawatha’s students receive instruction about healthy relationships. In addition, they utilize resources from the district & follow the MPS guidelines if/when an instance of bullying does occur.
