Programación académica

New City aims to grow students who: have a strong sense of agency going into high school after 8th grade; have gained a sense of themselves; are able to think critically, to communicate & to collaborate effectively; imagine & create; & care about others. Their charter was anchored in the understanding that social learning is as important as academic learning. The New City program values challenging learning & utilizes EL Education ELA & Eureka Math as core curricula. They are in the process of developing learning “expeditions” that tackle social studies & science standards through hands-on, learning adventures. As a staff, they value relationships for learning & have built a professional community that can model caring & cooperation for students. “Crew” (where no one is a passenger) starts the day with team-building & social skills development.

Valores escolares

New City School strives to create a community where all facets of the city are represented & where every student & staff member feels fully welcomed & significant. They are guided by their values around diversity, community, citizenship, quality work, & creativity, & their mission to integrate social, emotional, & academic learning.

Discipline Policy

The New City School approach to discipline is designed to teach students social, emotional, & academic skills to successfully work & learn with all adults & students while they’re not only in school, but also outside & beyond school settings. They aim to instill the desire to choose responsible behavior, because students see the value in doing so, rather than being motivated by external factors like the promise of reward or the fear of punishment. Just as the word “discipline” is derived from the Latin word for learning, this approach is grounded in the beliefs that: students can learn to be self-regulating, cooperative, caring, & responsible; discipline can be taught the same way any other content is taught; & students learn best when they’re actively engaged & invested in constructing their own understanding.

Bullying Prevention Policy

In order to achieve the mission & vision of New City School, & to sustain a supportive community for all staff, teachers, students, & parents, it is imperative that students are free from harassment on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, familial status, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, or disability. To this end, New City School prohibits any form of harassment on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, familial status, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, or disability.
New City School will act to investigate all complaints of bullying or harassment, & to discipline or take appropriate action against any student, teacher, or other school personnel who is found to have violated this policy.

New City School is committed to: serving every student & family equitably, to preparing all students for success in high school & beyond, & to providing a welcoming & inclusive learning environment. Anchored in the understanding that relationships are foundational for learning, New City maintains small class sizes that allow for stronger & deeper relationships between students, & between teachers & students. Days begin with Crew meetings in which students learn to care about their classmates, develop social skills, & cultivate a safe & welcoming learning community. Students’ voice is fostered & supports are differentiated by an increasingly diverse staff. Student voices are fostered through arts. Community liaison staff ensure that communication is effective between families & the school, & a student support team proactively provides supports for students.
